JOB SUMMARY:

The Electrical Design Engineer provides expertise within the department for electrical/electronic systems for Ditch Witch or Subsite branded products and consulted on the most challenging technological problems in this area. Primary duties include design and selection of components related to electronic or electromechanical equipment. The employee will use ECAD software to create electronic schematics; lead the work of drafter/illustrators, and technicians; works closely with various component suppliers; and performs other duties as assigned.

KEY RESPONSIBILTIES:

  • Collect and analyze technical information from a variety of sources, including:
    • conversations with engineers, product managers, suppliers, etc.
    • technical documents.
    • operation of equipment.
    • their own tests & experiments
  • Develop design concepts for circuits and systems, involving analog and digital design techniques and interface sensors with microcontrollers/microprocessors.
  • Design, implement and test electrical circuits to demonstrate compliance with specifications.
  • Prepare technical design and production documentation.
  • Define measurement techniques, tuning procedures, and special test fixtures for production use.
  • Meets or exceed typical expectations for creativity, productivity, quality, and safety.
  • Serves as an expert within the department for a design related field and provides consulting to others on technical matters.
  • Leads and mentors design activities utilizing best-in-class engineering design practices (requirements, design, implementation, verification, validation). Coordinates design activities with other personnel, including the flow of information and documentation to other departments.
  • Evaluates feasibility and applicability of newer technologies and methods to products and designs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Office environment most of the time with regular trips to the shop and outside work.
  • Shop and outdoor environments include physical hazards such as utilities (typically gas, electric, and water lines), powered vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic, sharp objects, and moving machinery. Outdoor environment includes work in all kinds of weather while operating and demonstrating machinery and construction site conditions such as open excavations, unimproved land, uncompleted structures, etc.
  • Working with hazardous materials, including fuels, lubricants, solvents, and batteries.
  • Occasional overnight travel.
  • Rapidly changing workload, priorities, demands, schedules, and deadlines.
  • Regular, continuous use of a personal computer.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
    • or closely related engineering field.
  • More than 5 years of experience in a product design or related engineering role.
  • Advanced degree can substitute for some experience.
  • Demonstrated capabilities acting as technical team lead of a project.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and testing analog and digital circuits.
  • Experience designing products using electromagnetic signal pulses to locate underground utilities a plus.
  • Strong experience designing signal acquisition and signal processing circuits is desired
  • Strong experience doing real time DSP is desired
  • Experience designing power conversion devices is a plus
  • Experience in developing application and embedded firmware for 32-bit microcontrollers in C/C++ is a plus
  • Experience using real-time operating systems (FreeRTOS, Linux, …) a plus
  • Knowledge of common communications busses such as SPI, I2C, and RS232.
  • Experience utilizing Agile and Waterfall design methodologies a plus.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Works well in a team environment.
