Description:
As a Senior Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of engineers focused on delivering products and platforms directly involved with enabling a data driven organization. Involvement includes driving technical decisions, design, coaching/career mentoring, and escalation in an agile environment that builds and maintain products and platforms. You will be responsible for ensuring the success of the team (UI, Services, Dev-Ops, Data Engineering) and partnership with business partners and product owners.

This role will lead the engineering teams behind two of our key enterprise data platform products to enable the democratization and usage of trusted data at enterprise scale.

Data Analysis platform: We have developed a cloud based suite of tools that simplifies the end-to-end process for creating data insights & empowering data exploration . This includes everything from querying, blending, generating analysis & insights, exploration and mining, dashboarding and reporting, and data science development like machine learning and AI.

Metadata platform: Our metadata platform is a central metadata hub that ingests and indexes metadata from all Target data platforms including Hadoop, RDBMS, Kafka and API sources. This platform plays a central role enabling data consumers to discover and use trusted data at Target in all the places they work with data.

As a Sr. Engineering Manager, you'll take the lead as you are expected to have good understanding of Platform Engineering technologies and drive a strong execution and partnership culture by providing overall strategy and technical direction for Platform Engineering teams. Drive product development and operations with lead full stack engineers and drive technical decision making, adhering to Target architecture and other enterprise decisions. You'll have a strong focus on team management and development, equal focus will be on writing production code and hands on active development of the capabilities and solutions. Establish good stakeholder communication and work closely with Product teams and influence set product roadmap and help drive requirements while being a strong advocate of extreme agile and DevOps practices across engineers. Build and manage a team of high performing full stack engineers and provide leadership, coaching, motivation and recommend staffing levels, operating procedures, tools and systems for the team. Provide career development and performance management to a team of engineers. He/she also stays current with capabilities of overall Target's technical components relevant to their team. Sr Engineering Manager should be able to represent the Voice of technology work and partner with Product owner to prioritize the efforts and should be able to effectively play the role of a scrum lead.

  • Understand the Platform needs and from other Engineering teams and provide appropriate guidance to engineers
  • Partner with the Product Owner to successfully deliver platform capabilities that support Target business needs
  • Ensure high availability, scalability and security of platforms
  • Align team goals to OKRs and champion the creation of outcome-based measurements to enable continuous improvement
  • Partner with Product owner to gather feedback on platforms to understand and plan future needs
  • Plays Scrum Master role and supports agile ceremonies according to the need
  • Coach and lead team members in career goals
  • Evaluates new technologies and participates in decision-making
  • Designs and drives the creation and adoption of new Platform Engineering standards and best practices
  • Coach team members around engineering principles and Agile practices to ensure high-performance, scalable, and repeatable practices across teams and throughout the organization
  • Active participant in team meetings, talent and leadership discussions


Required Experience:
  • 4-year degree in an a Computer Science, related engineering field or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of engineering (software development) experience
  • 1-3 years of managing teams with a strong track record of delivery and managing products
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to variety of audiences
  • Team-orientated, passionate about developing others' skills and capabilities
  • Successful track record of working in large enterprise technology ecosystems leading complex technology teams
  • Deep understanding of agile development processes and methodology including continuous integration and delivery, with a mindset of building incrementally and delivering business value quickly
  • Strong understanding in data practices and technologies
  • Expertise in 2 or more of the programming languages
  • Experience with integration, data handling technologies and other open source frameworks


Desired Qualifications:
  • BS degree in computer science or equivalent
  • Experience with Java, Spring, or related JVM language and framework
  • Experience building platforms or new products from the ground up
  • Experience working in an open source model
  • Extensive experience working in an agile environment (i.e. user stories, iterative development, etc.)
