General Repair Worker

General Maintenance Worker

 

Location:  Golden Valley

Employment Condition:  Permanent, full-time

Shift & Normal Hours of Work: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday

The incumbents in these positions are required to be immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called.

General Repair Worker

This position performs semi-skilled jobs in a variety of trade areas. The incumbent replaces parts, makes minor adjustments to machinery, and repairs buildings, equipment, and miscellaneous items. Performs semi-skilled maintenance and repair work on heating and power equipment, boilers, engines, generators, pumps, compressors, heaters, and motors.  Make minor repairs to plumbing, heating, cooling, and air conditioning equipment. Assist building trade’s personnel with various major building construction tasks. Assist with snow/ice removal, mowing and landscaping maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of:

  • General methods and practices of a variety of trade areas (i.e., mechanics, masonry, welding, electrical, plumbing and carpentry) sufficient to assist licensed trades workers and to repair machinery, tools, and facilities in a timely and safe manner.
  • Occupational hazards and safety measures related to trades work sufficient to perform the job duties safely and efficiently.

Ability to:

  • Safely use hand and power hand tools.
  • Safely use, operate, and maintain trucks, tractors, and other ground and road maintenance equipment; provide work instructions to unskilled helpers.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting, carrying, and bending.

Required:

  • Class D Driver’s License

Ability to obtain and maintain:

  • Specials Class Engineer’s License.
  • DOLI Unlicensed Individual Electrical Work Registration within 6 months.
  • DOLI Unlicensed Individual Plumbing Work Registration within 6 months.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Carpentry skills/experience.
  • AAS Degree in Facilities System Technology or Heating, Ventilation, AC Technology with at least two (2) years of experience working in building maintenance or building trades.
  • Knowledge and application of word processing software.
  • Ability to collect, combine, organize, and accurately describe available information in the form of reports.
  • Ability to perform skilled work in a number of trade areas and to assist with more difficult work.

Pre-Employment Physical Exam:  A pre-placement physical examination is required for this position.

General Maintenance Worker

Job Summary - This position will perform general maintenance and cleaning of the MnDOT Golden Valley buildings and grounds as well as assist trades people and general repair workers at the Golden Valley property in related work and perform heavy manual labor. 

Examples of work include:

  • Perform repair and maintenance duties as assigned.
  • Make minor repairs to buildings and equipment.
  • Perform minor plumbing.
  • Assist electrician with electrical projects.
  • Assist in maintaining HVAC equipment.
  • Removal of snow and ice from sidewalks and entrance.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of:

  • Different types of flooring/floor covering sufficient to determine proper methods of maintenance and appropriate cleaning methods, materials, agents, and equipment.
  • Chemical cleaning agents such as ammonia, bleaches, scouring agents and soaps sufficient to appropriately select the agent(s), handle and apply, and dispose of safely.
  • Methods, tools, and equipment used in maintenance sufficient to use effectively and operate safely and to make minor repairs.

Ability to:

  • Follow simple oral and written instructions
  • Perform assigned tasks with limited work direction
  • Perform parking lot snow and ice removal activities by operating (or learning to operate) snow and ice control equipment (e.g., loaders, pickup plows, skid steers, blowers, brooms, etc.)
  • Keep simple records

Required:

  • Valid Class D Driver’s License

Ability to obtain and maintain:

  • DOLI Unlicensed Individual Electrical Work Registration within 6 months of hire.
  • DOLI Unlicensed Individual Plumbing Work Registration within 6 months of hire.                                                 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Forklift certification
  • Experience in maintaining buildings and grounds.
  • Basic understanding of heating, cooling, electrical and plumbing systems.
  • Knowledge of Building Operating Control Systems.
  • Experience in operating grounds equipment and forklift.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Experience in remodeling projects, including painting and general repair.
  • Experience with snow removal.
