About the job:

As a Director of Product Design, you'll lead the teams who are responsible for Design Systems for guest and team member experiences and the Design Operations team that supports a 100+ person UX organization. You will be responsible for the creation of strategic design deliverables; developing, growing, and staffing your team; and the performance of a highly engaged and motivated group of product designers and managers.

In this role, you will lead the strategic vision for several design systems that support both guest and team member experiences. You will lean on your product design expertise to lead product discovery and develop strategic design deliverables that support a range of design system product maturity and drive the success of these products. You will advocate for adoption, drive contribution models, and educate partners on the strategic role of design systems with design leaders, engineering leaders, product leaders, accessibility and end-users.

In this role, you will also lead the strategic implementation and growth of a new DesignOps team. In collaboration with product design leaders, you will lean on your product design expertise to lead and develop best practices for our design and UX team on how we work together, how we get work done, and how our work creates impact.

You are a seasoned user experience professional who takes the lead to provide a visionary outlook to teams from the lens of research and world-class product design & development. In this role, the you lead the user experience of a large portfolio of product design and cross-product initiatives, ensuring they meet business and experience objectives. You set high standards for craft, process, accessibility, and collaboration across multiple disciplines. You are a leader in setting measures for success, tracking progress, and celebrating wins.

You'll manage the performance and development of a team of user experience managers, product designers, and the onset of a design operations team. You'll recruit, hire and mentor world-class UX talent that exceed expectations of product and business partners and leadership. You'll prioritize UX resources and the work they're involved in, placing team members on high priority initiatives that complement their skills, career ambitions and growth opportunities. You'll continually coach UX team members on tactical design skills, human skills, and growth within their careers.

You'll bring empathy and research insights to every business problem. You'll participate in research and leverage data to inform design decisions. You'll help to define objectives and results with product, engineering and business partners. You'll push work forward with high standards and an approach that follows the voice of the user. You'll collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of UX leaders, product designers, content designers, engineers, product managers, accessibility consultants, data analysts and UX researchers.

About you:

  • Passion for creating equitable, inclusive digital experiences
  • 10+ years' experience in digital software product work, with user experience emphases in research, UX architecture, interaction design and/or visual design
  • Proven experience leading a digitally-oriented, multi-disciplinary team, project, or effort


  • Significant examples of successful UX team leadership and mentoring
  • Portfolio of work demonstrating cross-channel expertise and skill in creating user-centric digital experiences, UX research, prototyping and testing
  • Strong digital experience capability, including working knowledge of relevant UX software & tools, collaboration tools, UX principles, UX research methodologies and digital product design & development best practices
  • Proven ability to successfully lead large-scale projects and initiatives involving multiple cross-functional teams
  • Established collaborator and problem-solver

This position may be considered for a Full-Time Remote or Hybrid work arrangement based on Target's needs. A Hybrid work arrangement means the team members core role will be a blend of virtual and onsite at a Target location. A Full-Time Remote work arrangement means the team member works full-time from home or an alternate location that's not a Target location, does not have a desk at their primary HQ work location and may travel to HQ up to 4 times a year.

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada residents is ($136,700) to ($246,000). Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, Target cares about and invests in you as a team member, so that you can take care of yourself and your family.
