HUMAN RESOURCES DIRECTOR – FULL-TIME

Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (Legal Aid) is seeking a full-time Human Resources (HR) Director to administer, revise, and create human resource policies, programs, and practices firm-wide. This position would be based in Legal Aid’s Minneapolis office. The HR Director will be a member of Legal Aid’s Leadership Team and report to the Executive Director. This position is temporarily remote and will be a hybrid position upon any firm-wide office return. This position will start as soon as possible after an offer is extended.

BACKGROUND: Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid is a 7-office, 180 employee, nonprofit law firm, providing free legal representation and services to people with low incomes, people with disabilities, and elderly Minnesotans. Legal Aid receives funds from federal, state, and local government, foundations, United Ways, and private donors.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Apply the principles of Legal Aid’s Racial Justice Values Statement in all interactions
  • Manage the human resources function for all seven Legal Aid offices
  • Review, revise, and create personnel policies, programs, and procedures under the direction of the Executive Director
  • Maintain confidentiality with all personnel records, documents, and information in compliance with state and federal laws and Legal Aid policies
  • Maintain strong collaborative relationships across Legal Aid
  • Comply with local, state, and federal legal requirements, studying new legislation and advising management on necessary actions
  • Serve as EEO specialist, including filing Affirmative Action Plan, MDHR, and EEO-1 report annually with state and federal agencies and maintaining records, reports, and logs to conform to EEO regulations
  • Coordinate all benefits programs for Legal Aid employees, including medical, dental, and life insurance, short- and long-term disability, 403(b) retirement plans, and flexible spending accounts
  • Administer Workers’ Compensation, leaves of absence under FMLA, and disability programs
  • Communicate with employees about compensation, benefits, and other facets of their employment
  • Assist employees, including supervisory staff, in resolving conflicts and other personnel problems
  • Respond to questions or complaints from employees in a timely fashion
  • Coordinate staff trainings and maintain training records and goals
  • Monitor performance appraisal program
  • Create and edit employment advertisements for publication
  • Support supervisory staff through talent acquisition by reviewing applications for employment, providing counsel and advice, screening and interviewing applicants, checking references, and determining appropriate salary levels
  • Establish an orientation procedure for onboarding new hires and training them to meet the needs of the employee, organization, and clients it serves
  • Process all new employees and all change-of-status forms
  • Assist with establishing diversity, equity, and inclusion excellence as core values throughout Legal Aid
  • Assist with driving diverse talent identification and retention strategies for Legal Aid
  • Monitor unemployment claims and follows up appeals
  • Provides public information such as verifying employment
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree and 5 to 8 years of HR experience, or a similar combination of education/experience
  • Must be a proven leader with sound conflict resolution and interpersonal skills and is able to work efficiently with a diverse population
  • Excellent command of contemporary diversity, equity, inclusion, and multiculturalism concepts and issues as they relate to HR principles and standards
  • Demonstrated interest in and commitment to the needs of clients with low incomes and disabilities
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other management staff, employees, and the general public
  • General knowledge of principles and practices of personnel administration
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Strategic thinking, leadership, and planning skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of HR experience
  • Senior leadership experience leading the HR function, particularly in the areas of legal compliance, talent acquisition, compensation planning and analysis, benefit planning, and training and development
  • Experience in organizational development practices to achieve operational excellence in a complex work environment
  • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification
  • Diverse economic, social, and cultural experiences

SALARY: $80,556 to $101,719 per year, depending on experience, plus benefits. Benefits include family medical and dental insurance, short- and long-term disability, life insurance, 403(b) with employer match, FSA, employee assistance programs, and generous paid time off.
