Comprised of Public Relations, Crisis Management and Internal Enterprise Communications, this team strengthens and protects Target's reputation and helps drive traffic, sales and guest loyalty. You'll develop deep relationships with business partners to ensure critical information flows through multiple channels, building confidence with team members and external stakeholders and strengthening Target's position within the competitive retail marketplace.

As Director of Communications at Target, you and your team will be responsible for bringing to life the story of Target's corporate responsibility efforts, progress and impact. You'll serve as a lead strategic counselor for communications planning and programming in support of all Corporate Responsibility initiatives, inclusive of Target Forward, corporate giving and community engagement, the Target Foundation, and Target's ESG reporting. You will oversee all aspects of internal and external communications, including executive communications and both proactive and reactive media relations. Your job is to reach a variety of stakeholders, from reporters and investors to community partners and Target team members and guests, in a compelling manner that builds confidence in our strategy, mitigates risk and asserts Target's sustainability and social impact leadership in the marketplace.
  • Apply a strategic lens to the communications support of all Corporate Responsibility initiatives to ensure alignment and generate favorable outcomes for the enterprise.
  • Lead holistic communications planning and programming in support of all Corporate Responsibility initiatives, inclusive of Target Forward, corporate giving and community engagement, the Target Foundation, and Target's ESG reporting.
  • Oversee internal and external stakeholder mapping and engagement in support of Target Forward key initiatives.
  • Serve as communications counselor to Target's SVP of Corporate Responsibility, developing their comprehensive positioning plans, inclusive of internal and external strategies, and supporting all communication needs.
  • Serve as strategic counselor in the development of Target's ESG report narrative and external storytelling.
  • Lead the development of material for internal and external corporate communications and presentations.
  • Work with your team to develop holistic communications plans in support of Target's priority initiatives and partner with the department's channel owners to bring stories to life via our owned platforms (i.e., A Bullseye View, internal marketing, etc.).
  • Work with your team to manage all proactive and reactive media inquiries related to Target's Corporate Responsibility activities.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for Target with business and consumer media.
  • Manage external agency partner relationships and budgets.
  • Serve as a member of the Communications leadership team, with a focus on department-wide planning and talent development.
  • Support the growth and development of Communications team members.


About You:
  • Minimum of 10-15 years of professional experience, preferably including experience working at an agency and in a corporate environment.
  • Sustainability communications acumen and experience in corporate sustainability strategies, goals, ESG reporting and disclosures with Fortune 500 companies from a corporate or agency environment.
  • A proven leader, with an ability to develop a strong bench of talent.
  • Ability to develop compelling communication strategies with clear and measurable goals.
  • A creative storyteller and versatile writer, with an ability to hone in on key themes based on audience segment.
  • Fluent in all aspects of internal and external communications, from executive speechwriting to media relations.
  • Expert media relations skills, with a high degree of comfort working with consumer and business press.
  • Experience serving as an external spokesperson.
  • Experience managing multiple external agency partners and large budgets.
  • Ability to coach and counsel C-suite executives.
  • Strong business acumen and knowledge of the retail environment, sustainability and media landscape and an ability to distill trends into communication implications.
  • Strong understanding of ESG trends, disclosures and reporting and regulations, and their role and implications for corporate reputation and communications planning.
  • Strong understanding of social media, including influencer marketing, and its intersection with traditional media and consumer perceptions.
  • Ability to work across multiple business units within a large, matrixed organization.


This position may be considered for a Full-Time Remote or Hybrid work arrangement based on Target's needs. A Hybrid work arrangement means the team members core role will be a blend of virtual and onsite at a Target location. A Full-Time Remote work arrangement means the team member works full-time from home or an alternate location that's not a Target location, does not have a desk at their primary HQ work location and may travel to HQ up to 4 times a year.

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada residents is $113,800 to $204,900. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, Target cares about and invests in you as a team member, so that you can take care of yourself and your family.
