PHARMACY ROTATION - JUNE START DATE

Position Description

UCare provides a unique opportunity for rotation students to gain experience within the managed care setting. The rotation will expose students to the roles and responsibilities for pharmacists at a health plan and to learn more about population health and government health care programs (Medicare, Medicaid, and Health Exchange). The student will be expected to work collaboratively as part of a team, perform drug class reviews, review newly marketed drugs, perform claims data analyses, perform pharmacoeconomic analyses, help improve quality measures, and help with formulary maintenance. Rotation objectives include the following:

• Understand the roles and responsibilities of the pharmacist within a managed care organization

• Learn about other departments within a managed care organization and how they interact with the pharmacy department

• Learn about the different government health care programs and regulatory oversight of these programs

• Learn about managing a pharmacy benefit and formulary administration

• Gain experience with reviews for medication requests

• Gain experience with tools available to assess utilization and trends within pharmacy

• Gain experience reviewing medication literature and newly marketed medications

• Learn about different quality and clinical programs, including Medication Therapy Management (MTM), for health plans

• Other projects and duties as assigned.

Education

Bachelor's degree in health sciences research, public health or other field with a strong emphasis on critical thinking and program analysis. Statistic courses required. Master's degree or higher in informatics or health care discipline preferred.

Required Experience

Experience with health care metrics with understanding of healthcare data and key concepts in the Managed Care and Disease Management industries. Statistical calculation and interpretation. Related database experience and experience with statistical and query software (Excel, MS Access, SQL, Tableau). Two years of health care industry, program analysis and software administrator experience.

Preferred Experience

Related database experience and experience with statistical and query software (SAS) and visualization (Tableau).
