As a Principal Engineer on the Inbound and Outbound Operations team, you'll set the strategy for how our tech solutions drive our replenishment operations across warehouses and stores. Target moves over $19B in inventory each year. Accurate representation of this inventory and efficient operations are critical enablers of Target's business. Target is committed to a stores as hub strategy - using our stores as the primary means of fulfilling guests orders. Our technology solutions are responsible for moving the right quantity of inventory at the right time - to best position this product to meet our guests' needs.

  • Understand Target's business and technical environments and define solutions to resolve complex business challenges
  • Provide the team with thought leadership to promote re-use and develop consistent, scalable patterns
  • Lead and participate in complex construction, automation, and implementation activities. Establish new standards and best practices to monitor, test, automate, and maintain systems.
  • Evaluate current and emerging technologies and participate in decision-making on where and how Target should apply these technologies.
  • Be creative! Explore opportunities to solve business challenges through technology solutions. Be part of a culture of creativity and learning.
  • In complex and unstructured situations, serve as an expert resource to create and improve standards and best practices to ensure high-performance, scalable, repeatable, and secure deliverables.
  • Stay current with Target's technical capabilities and evolving infrastructure space.
  • Building diagnostic tools to quickly identify issues and enable self-recovery where possible.
  • Work with engineering leaders to build a high performing engineering team and provide technical leadership, coaching, motivation and participate in the selection of technical talent.

About you:
  • 4-year degree or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of experience in technology development
  • Demonstrates broad and deep expertise in multiple computer languages and open-source frameworks
  • Has demonstrated success in solving complex technical problems in more than one technical or functional area
  • Understands business fundamentals and how technologies can support business goals along with how to translate business vision into a technical strategy
  • Has proven leadership capabilities, the ability to influence others, interpersonal skills, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong team player who understands concepts of teamwork and team effectiveness.
  • Designs, develop and approve end-to-end functionality of a product line, platform, or infrastructure
  • Demonstrates expertise in analysis and optimization of systems capacity, performance, and operational health
  • Stays current with new and evolving technologies via formal training and self-directed education
  • Experience in building highly scalable distributed systems
  • Hands-on leadership, who can mentor junior engineers towards a strong OOP programming mindset
