The Future of Work team owns many essential functions that support team members' experience of working at Target. This team includes Hybrid work, where we are redefining the future work design and work spaces and Talent Analytics, where through listening, metrics, analytics and insights, you'll help bring people data to the center of all people decisions. Or, maybe you're an HR Process and Technology guru, where your aptitudes for efficiency and technology will ensure peak HR system performance and getting the maximum possible return on our HR technology investments.

As a Principal Labor Economist on the Future of Work and HR Strategy team, using your subject matter expertise in economics and on labor markets and employment, you will monitor and understand key labor trends and synthesize those trends through the lens of Target's work and business strategy. In this highly collaborative role, you'll partner with internal stakeholders, produce data insights products and facilitate discussions with senior leaders to drive long term business strategy.

Qualified candidates will have excellent oral and written communication skills and an advanced degree in Economics with a solid background in data analysis in labor economics. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively to conduct applied research on issues pertinent at the international, national, and local levels. The ability to communicate complex, technical concepts concisely and clearly to an audience with various backgrounds and levels of experience is essential.

Core Responsibilities
  • Analyze international, domestic and local landscape and synthesize macro and micro economic and labor trends.
  • Analyze internal labor market, business strategies, and outcomes to help us connect macro and micro relationships.
  • Combine, and synthesize the external and internal economic and labor trends, to help leaders drive key decisions related to our business and workforce strategies.
  • Establish and deliver data products to synthesize external and internal macro and micro economic and labor trends to enable leader to understand the impact to target in the near and long term.
  • Plan and execute a comprehensive employment analysis calendar and be the go-to in-house resource for all economic-related research related to employment and labor markets, including unemployment, labor force participation, wage growth and trends in compensation preferences, labor productivity and labor mobility and population shifts.
  • Conduct sophisticated empirical research in Labor Economics and write up findings and recommendations that can be shared with stakeholders; present research findings to technical and non-technical audiences internally and externally.
  • Leverage experience in labor economics to ask the right questions, to develop a deeper understanding of how talent is shifting.
  • Use economic theories to structure ambiguous problems, define proper metrics and assemble unique datasets to test hypotheses; and assess and interpret in service to the business strategy.
  • Work seamlessly with senior executive leaders, including influencing without authority, and facilitates key discussions with senior HR leaders to share insights.

Desired Qualifications
  • PhD or Master's degree in Economics; a minimum of 4 years of experience in conducting quantitative research analysis (survey data, micro data) outside of an educational environment.
  • Experience in both performing research and data analysis and knowing when to shift to execution and activating others against a body of work.
  • Experience analyzing labor and human resources data required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills with a strong ability to listen to understand, simplify complex insights and tell compelling stories
  • Experience using advanced time series analysis and econometrics, including seasonality analysis and adjustments.
  • Familiarity with academic, government and private sector economic research related to employment and labor markets.
  • Familiarity with survey research and methodology, preferably employment survey research
  • Exceptional analytical and conceptual problem-solving skills and ability to synthesize and clearly communicate complex findings.
  • Ability to build statistical models & data sets to solve complex business problems.
  • Ability to synthesize a vast amount of information and insights
  • Proven track record managing own workflow/priorities while meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with colleagues at all levels; able to build and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders and users of delivered products.
  • Ability to assimilate information quickly and to learn/ follow a systematic approach to strategic problem solving.


This position may be considered for a Full-Time Remote or Hybrid work arrangement based on Target's needs. A Hybrid work arrangement means the team members core role will be a blend of virtual and onsite at a Target location. A Full-Time Remote work arrangement means the team member works full-time from home or an alternate location that's not a Target location, does not have a desk at their primary HQ work location and may travel to HQ up to 4 times a year.

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada residents is $119,500-$215,100.
