About Us:

As a Fortune 50 company with more than 350,000 team members worldwide, Target is an iconic brand and one of America's leading retailers.

Working at Target means the opportunity to help all families discover the joy of everyday life. Caring for our communities is woven into who we are, and we invest in the places we collectively live, work and play. We prioritize relationships, fuel and develop talent by creating growth opportunities, and succeed as one Target team. At our core, our purpose is ingrained in who we are, what we value, and how we work. It's how we care, grow, and win together.

Supply Chain and Logistics
Target Global Supply Chain and Logistics is evolving at an incredible pace. We are constantly reimagining how we get the right product to the guest even better, faster and more cost effectively than before. We are becoming more intelligent, automated and algorithmic in our decision-making, so that no matter how guests shop-in stores or on Target.com-we deliver the convenience and immediate gratification they demand and deserve. We are on a mission to win decisively over any competitor, with a seamless and superior guest service experience unlike any they can offer. Our teams work with the agility our mission requires, and we constantly come together to implement new processes in record time. So we're looking for exceptional people who are proactive, creative, independent, innovative, risk-savvy and comfortable working in varying degrees of ambiguity. Are you a critical thinker who seeks the root cause and can analyze both qualitatively and quantitatively? Are you a creative problem-solver who simplifies problems, quickly identifies solutions, commits to a plan and then positively influences others to execute it? If so, you will have success on one of our dynamic teams.

A role in HQ Engineering and Activation means being at the heart of our perpetual reimagining. This group is the think tank and laboratory for the innovative ideas that spark change throughout the Supply Chain. We are inventors, metrics masters, data geeks, testers, triers, course-correctors and askers of the all-important question "What if ... ?". This team influences processes, engineers the robotics and automation to support those processes, activates solutions sustainably across the network and manages those assets. Your specific expertise-whether it's people, process, technology, or data-will be felt well beyond the boundaries of the Supply Chain organization, positively impacting Target team members and guests alike.

As a Lead Controls Engineer, you will use your electrical, controls, robotics, and project management skills to analyze, recommend, and drive continuous improvement efforts to increase up time and optimize utilization of automated storage, material handling, and robotic systems across multiple distribution centers. Serve as a subject matter expert and asset manager for the wide variety of subcomponents utilized within material handling systems and upstream/downstream equipment. Assist with remote trouble shooting and involve other resources to restore full functionality. Plan and lead projects to improve safety, increase reliability, improve throughput rates, increase efficiency, address spare parts obsolescence, and lifecycle equipment at proper intervals. Partner with distribution center maintenance and operations teams to understand problems, evaluate challenges with data and analytics, and mitigate issues.

Responsibilities of this role include:
  • Identify and prioritize improvements to electrical controls systems by analyzing production and equipment data.
  • Visit remote sites as needed to observe, analyze, teach, and recommend changes to equipment maintenance to improve the safety, reliability, and performance of the equipment.
  • Maintain comprehensive technical subject matter expertise of existing Target material handling systems and technology specifications. This may include varying types of package and pallet conveyor, sortation systems, ASRS cranes, robots, picking/packing modules, scales, and other specialty equipment.
  • Evaluate electrical and controls elements of proposed machinery designs to ensure they align with the defined requirements and intent of Target's controls standards.
  • Assist with the evaluation and deployment of new robotic systems and take responsibility for long-term asset ownership of those systems once they have transitioned from project commissioning to the long-term run state.
  • Develop, document, and validate robotic and automated equipment maintenance plans.
  • Assist with reviews and revisions to Target's controls standards.
  • Perform system/platform analysis and develop life cycle road maps for automated controls subcomponents. Recommend business cases for changes or upgrades for equipment based on ROI, total cost of ownership, and risk mitigation. Prepare and present documentation to justify capital expense for equipment replacement or additions.
  • Use results from Field Engineering Team assessment visits or vendor equipment audits to assist distribution centers in evaluating equipment readiness and the state of network maintenance processes. Assist the Material Handling Systems Engineers in facilitating failure analysis and root cause analysis to identify performance gaps in processes or equipment performance.
  • Partner with appropriate HQ resources on issues that require additional scoping, involve system changes, or have network-level impact. Identify and escalate issues. When necessary, pull appropriate teams together to solve problems.
  • Manage projects implementing small, medium, and large improvements to the automated material handling controls systems, ensuring vendor and other project resources meet timelines, deliverables, and performance criteria.
  • Present and tailor key technical concepts and ideas to a variety of audiences, including technical subject matter experts and non-technical business leaders.
  • Serve as a system administrator subject matter expert for Splunk systems leveraged to capture data and provide reporting and analytics to the engineering and operations teams.
  • Benchmark other industries, retailers, and current technology. Identify potential new technologies and applications for testing and potential implementation at Target.
  • Apply structured problem solving techniques to define problems, analyze information collected, and develop solutions.
  • Maintain asset records, scheduled maintenance plans, and spare parts records using Maximo (asset management system)
  • Manage information technology security vulnerabilities linked to material handling equipment through vulnerability identification and resolution.

Candidate must be comfortable periodically traveling to distribution center locations within the U.S. to interact more closely with the managed assets and the local support teams.

Examples of managed automated material handling assets may include but are not limited to:
  • Automated storage and retrieval system cranes
  • Robots
  • Shoe sorters / line sorters
  • Industrial controls and safety systems
  • Barcode scanners
  • Print & apply systems
  • Conveyor systems carrying individual cartons or full pallets of cartons
