A role as a Principal Product Development Scientist means leading formulated and materials product strategy and creating a future vision of something truly original. Do you love to create product solutions that help meet strategic business goals? Can you demonstrate creative and inventive ways to develop products that are unprecedented in the marketplace for their quality and performance? Then you'll have success with our team of Scientists who own the formulation and materials development of Target-Owned Brands from OTC & Household Essentials and Beauty to Pet Food & Grooming. In close partnership with compliance and sourcing counterparts, you'll drive brand cohesion and continuity of quality & performance, while ensuring our products meet merchant line plans, assortment strategies, price points and overall product direction. You'll also collaborate with vendors to ensure that the brand vision is clearly understood and successfully brought to life with every product we offer.

As the Principal Scientist leading Pets & OTC Consumable product categories, you'll be accountable for championing and advancing owned brand products and strategic initiatives while proactively working to implement supporting technical solutions. You will be the primary Scientist for a specific category and responsible for influencing and driving the overall product vision for owned brand products to ensure differentiation from competition. You will leverage your extensive breadth and depth of specialized experience to develop guest-centric product solutions in partnership with key internal partners, external companies, vendors, and suppliers. You'll develop, drive, and advance the technical training curriculum and industry networking opportunities to advance our research and development efforts and build Target's reputation as a great place to work, learn, develop and advance.

You will be accountable to lead as a strategic driver, build strong partnerships, influence with expertise and champion our team and Company values. This will be accomplished through:

STRATEGIC DRIVER

Using your deep expertise and leadership in Food Science, you will create a future vision, drive exploration of new products, and navigate complex development to advance pyramid, division & category goals. You will lead all required lab testing, guest research, continuous improvement, technical specifications, and track industry trends to create strategies & roadmaps for product development across divisions & categories. Advances & champions integration of responsible, circular and inclusive initiatives into a clear strategy in Pet & OTC Consumables.

PARTNERSHIP & INFLUENCE

Leveraging your leadership and strategic thought, you will build collaborative relationships with internal and external partners including experts in the field (Veterinarians, Animal Nutritionists, Dietary Nutritionists), agencies (FDA, AAFCO) and business partners to drive business growth and brand credibility. Your insights will educate, motivate and influence product development and future vision for leadership and team. You will represent Target at relevant external moments to track industry trends, building a broad and diverse perspective on products & approach. You will establish deep relationship with vendor base, unlocking capabilities and growth in brand & business; mitigating risk through trusted partnerships.

About You:
  • B.S., M.S. or PhD in Food Science, Chemical Engineering or related discipline
  • 12+ years related industry experience
  • High Proficiency with consumable/chemical product development and formulation including cost drivers, ingredient interactions, and technical feasibility
  • Highly knowledgeable and experienced in product manufacturing and research
  • Exceptional at developing partnerships and working in a team environment
  • Strong problem solving skills and creative thinking skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills - ability to synthesize & communicate emerging science knowledge succinctly
  • Ability to think strategically and conceptually
  • Strong Business understanding and acumen
  • Strong project management skills
