As a Sr. Engineering Manager, you will lead an engineering team in an agile environment building solutions. The key to the success of this position is having strong & innovative approach to problem solving, great technical leadership, excellent communication (written and verbal, formal and informal), flexibility, and a self-motivated working style with attention to detail.

Our portfolio is responsible for ensuring a fast, reliable and secure guest checkout, payment and returns experience at 1930+ stores across the US. We enable nearly 80,000 team members to give the guest a great Target shopping experience on 50,000+ registers, 5,000+ self-checkout stations and 7000+ mobile checkout devices every day. Our engineers are responsible for keeping this large-scale operation running as well as building the next generation of checkout experiences. We use the latest open source and open stack tools to define and construct custom developed solutions. We work on autonomous teams, incorporating the latest technical practices, write code to handle massive scale, and take on full accountability for a product's technical performance.

There are two POS Engineering Manager Positions open:
  • The Register platform team create and maintain developer tooling to enable engineering teams building register applications to build solutions faster, with user consistency and reduce cognitive load on the app engineers.
  • The Guest and Team Member Service Application team builds and operates the applications that store team members use to process returns, look up receipts, assist guests in apply for tax exempt status among many other things.

As a Sr. Engineering manager, you'll take the lead as you:
  • Drive best practices and ensure development of high quality solutions/technologies through advocating for and ensuring standards for common assets and framework components
  • Determine the right technology choices (tech stack, development frameworks, upgrade decisions, hosting decision) to best deliver business value keeping in mind availability, scalability and reliability of solution at massive scale.
  • Drive resolution of technology roadblocks including code, infrastructure, build and deployment and be accountable for fully realizing business value by working with Product Management to deliver to customer expectations
  • Manage cross-product technical dependencies, alignment of key objectives and drive resolutions to conflicts to speed team delivery
  • Advocate for and ensure standards around technologies, frameworks, design patterns, processes and guiding values of the domain architecture, following and contributing to enterprise standards and architecture
  • Ensure all solutions/technologies adheres to all development & security standards for internal and external accessible applications


Requirements for Software Development:
  • 7+ years of engineering (software development) experience.
  • For the Register Platform team 2+ years of experience leading teams.
  • Experience with at least one full cycle implementation from requirement to production. Experience in building/implementing high performance & scalable server-side applications
  • 2+ years performing the lead engineer role for software development teams with a strong track record of product delivery for large, cross-functional projects
  • Experience operating medium to large scale systems
  • Experience with test-driven development and software test automation
  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to variety of audiences


Desired Qualifications:
  • BS degree in computer science or equivalent
  • Contribute back to the Open Source community is desirable
  • Extensive experience working in an agile environment (i.e. user stories, iterative development, etc.)
  • Register Experience:
    • Design Skills: Micro front end design, adaptive UI toolkit, Reusable React Functional Components
      Framework/Middleware Skills: ReactJS Framework, Redux, React Context API, Node.js, Electron Inter Process Communication API (Desirable)
    • Language Proficiency: JavaScript and TypeScript
  • Guest and TM Service Applications:
    • Design Skills: Micro front end design, adaptive UI toolkit, Reusable React Functional Components
      Framework/Middleware Skills: ReactJS Framework, Redux, React Context API
    • Language Proficiency: JavaScript and TypeScript
  • Prior experience of commerce (cart,calculations,checkout, payments etc.).
