Working within Tax, your mission will be to drive value-added work and support our core retail business goals. Our tax team focuses on all aspects of tax reporting including enhancing productivity and efficiency of core compliance through process and technology, monitoring tax risk and opportunities across all tax disciplines, engaging and educating Finance and the broader organization regarding tax considerations, and prioritizing team resources to support key work streams.
As a Director of Property Tax, you will lead a team of experts responsible for the compliance, accounting and appeals of Target's real and personal property taxes. This includes ensuring property taxes are timely and accurately reported in tax filings, financial forecasts, and financial statements and establishing and enforcing SOX and operational controls for the property tax accounting and compliance processes. Using internal analysis and external benchmarks, you will set the strategy to evaluate property tax assessments, set acceptability criteria, and direct prioritization for assessment challenges with the goal to efficiently and effectively resolve Property Tax controversy and appeals while maintaining a strong relationships with the taxing authorities. You will play an integral role in communicating our tax vision, setting goals and defining measures of success for your team, while also working with your peers as a member of the Tax Leadership group to build broader team engagement through skills development and training for the entire Tax team.
In this role, you will work closely with Accounting, Finance, Target Properties, Government Affairs and Legal as an integrated business partner supporting Target initiatives, establishing shared priorities, and advocating for Target's tax positions. You will also work with your team to manage a portfolio of external advisors, including measuring and reporting advisor performance, and achieving planned outcomes within budget. This role requires tax and accounting expertise, strong communication skills, and a passion for driving outcomes. These skills will support your work to deliver on expense minimization, development of future tax leaders, and ensure regulatory compliance obligations are meet using controlled and efficient processes.

This position may be considered for a Full-Time Remote or Hybrid work arrangement based on Target's needs. A Hybrid work arrangement means the team members core role will be a blend of virtual and onsite at a Target location. A Full-Time Remote work arrangement means the team member works full-time from home or an alternate location that's not a Target location, does not have a desk at their primary HQ work location and may travel to HQ up to 4 times a year.
Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada residents is $119,500 to $215,100. About you:
- 10+ years of experience with a public accounting firm or in a large corporate tax department
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Business and professional designation such as CMI, CAE or equivalent is preferred
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to develop top talent and motivate a team through a shared sense of purpose
- Independently drive accountability, instill confidence, and influence outcomes
- Strong business acumen and customer focus including ability to articulate technical matters and financial statement impact
- Highly organized, with the ability to adapt, prioritize and successfully manage multiple tasks or projects in response to changing or competing priorities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to establish rapport and collaborate effectively across all levels of an organization
- Experience with SAP, ITAM and data analytics tools such as Alteryx, PowerBI, or DOMO is preferred
