The Performance Engineering Team develops innovative ways to enable operational visibility into how applications and infrastructure are performing together. We are looking for highly motivated engineering professionals who can help connect the dots of end-to-end performance, enabling our product teams the insight and recommendations to maximize cross environmental performance. As a Lead Performance Engineer (Storage), you'll have the opportunity to:
  • Collaborate closely with our Product and Platform engineering teams
  • Influence the management of world class scale environments
  • Profile or model workloads and tune parameters to maximize efficiency while enabling performance
  • Identify and recommend QOS solutions to solve performance contention
  • Design and implement observability tools, dashboards, and endpoints to enable performance insights and recommendation development
  • Design and implement performance products that works seamlessly across cloud, on premise, and distributed environments
  • Coach product teams on how to apply or leverage performance offerings supporting their applications to gain operational visibility into the health and performance of their offerings.
  • Evangelize a performance culture at Target

About You:
  • BA/BS or equivalent experience
  • 7+ years total work experience
  • Has a deep understanding of the relationship between compute, network, and storage and has managed large scale environments
  • Has in-depth knowledge of state-of-the art engineering technical approaches in design, build, testing, debugging problems as required by domain
  • Maintains technical knowledge within areas of expertise
  • Stays current with new and evolving technologies
  • Understands the concepts of site reliability engineering fundamentals
  • Has exposure and demonstrable examples of working collaboratively with infrastructure and app partners to solve problems
  • Familiar with code review processes / best practices and familiarity with tools like Git, GitHub and GitLab
  • Experience using tools such as Grafana monitor systems, metrics, and creating dashboards
  • Experience designing and implement highly available systems/services
  • Experience participating in an open-source community with patches accepted upstream
  • Experience with developing systems tools, preferably using Python, Golang, BASH
  • Experience deploying and maintaining automated configuration management software such as: Ansible, Chef


Preferred Technology
  • Familiarity with the use of/concepts associated with the following tools:
    • Netapp OnCommand Insight
    • Active IQ Unified Manager (AIQUM)
    • Netapp/harvest
    • Linux on-system performance utilities: nfsstat, nfsiostat, sar, iostat, fio
    • Hypervisor performance utilities (KVM, VMWare)


This position may be considered for a Full-Time Remote or Hybrid work arrangement based on Target's needs. A Hybrid work arrangement means the team members core role will be a blend of virtual and onsite at a Target location. A Full-Time Remote work arrangement means the team member works full-time from home or an alternate location that's not a Target location, does not have a desk at their primary HQ work location and may travel to HQ up to 4 times a year.

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada residents is $105,800-$190,400.
