Working within Tax, your mission will be to drive value-added work and support our core retail business goals. Our tax team focuses on all aspects of tax reporting including enhancing productivity and efficiency of core compliance through process and technology, monitoring tax risk and opportunities across all tax disciplines, engaging and educating Finance and the broader organization regarding tax considerations, and prioritizing team resources to support key work streams.

As a Director of Tax Data and Technology, you will lead a team of experts responsible for driving current and future technology, data, and automation initiatives across Tax, with a primary focus on indirect taxes. This includes defining, developing and implementing strategic initiatives that innovates the way Tax leverages data, uses technology and drives automation in order to increase efficiency and control precision. You will also have responsibility and oversight to ensure our guest facing taxability decisions are appropriately set up and maintained within our tax systems. You will monitor and keep current on emerging tax technology trends and software tools to continually reevaluate and revise the tax technology strategy to ensure optimal results. You will play an integral role in communicating our tax vision, setting goals and defining measures of success for your team, while also working with your peers as a member of the Tax Leadership group to build broader team engagement through skills development and training for the entire Tax team.

In this role, you will work closely with Finance, Target Tech, Data Sciences and Stores Operations as an integrated business partner supporting Target initiatives and ensuring enterprise systems and data reporting meets the needs of Tax. This role requires expertise in tax technologies and tools, strong communication skills, and passion for driving outcomes. These skills will support your work to deliver on expense minimization, development of future tax leaders, and ensure regulatory compliance obligations are meet using controlled and efficient processes.

About you:
  • 10+ years of Tax experience with a public accounting firm or in a large corporate tax department with a focus in data
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Information Technology or equivalent is preferred
  • Advanced proficiency with Vertex, SAP, and data analytics tools such as Alteryx, PowerBI, or DOMO
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to develop top talent and motivate a team through a shared sense of purpose
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to translate business needs or changes into specific plans for implementation and data collection
  • Highly organized, with the ability to adapt, prioritize and successfully manage multiple tasks or projects in response to changing or competing priorities
  • Ability to establish rapport and collaborate effectively across all levels of an organization
  • Independently drive accountability, instill confidence, and influence outcomes
  • Ability to operate seamlessly in a matrixed environment


This position may be considered for a Full-Time Remote or Hybrid work arrangement based on Target's needs. A Hybrid work arrangement means the team members core role will be a blend of virtual and onsite at a Target location. A Full-Time Remote work arrangement means the team member works full-time from home or an alternate location that's not a Target location, does not have a desk at their primary HQ work location and may travel to HQ up to 4 times a year.

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada residents is $119,500 to $215,100.
