The St. Louis County Safety & Risk Management department is looking for an enthusiastic and detail oriented individual to join their team as an Insurance & Claims Specialist in Duluth, MN. This position will be working solely on Workers Compensation claims. St. Louis County is a mobile work friendly employer.

Responsible professional work investigating and responding to property, auto, general liability or workers’ compensation claims.

The salary range reflected above is the normal hiring range for 2022. 

The full salary range for an Insurance & Claims Specialist, including longevity pay, is $26.66 - $37.79 per hour.
The full salary range for an Insurance & Claims Specialist Senior, including longevity pay, is $29.70-$42.32 per hour.

This position is part of the Civil Service Basic Union Contract represented by Council 5 of AFSCME.

Distinguishing Features of Work

(Insurance & Claims Specialist and Insurance & Claims Specialist Senior) An employee in this class is responsible for investigating and processing property, auto, general liability or workers’ compensation claims.  Duties include investigating and processing claims, preparing and maintaining records and reports, preparing documentation for legal proceedings for either property, auto, general liability or workers’ compensation claims.  The work is performed under the direction of assigned supervisory staff.

Insurance and Claims Specialist -Property, Auto and General Liability:

Insurance and Claims Specialist -Workers' Compensation:

These work environment factors are general in nature and may vary depending on the specific position being filled.  CONSTANT: Sit; Talk/Speak; Hearing (close proximity 0-5 ft); Hearing (distance up to 20 ft); Vision (Near and Midrange); Works alone; Customer/Public contact; and Inside.  FREQUENT: Lift-Push/Pull while stationary up to 10 lbs; Carry-Push/Pull while moving about up to 10 lbs; Finger/Grasp/Handle; and Maintain Posture.  OCCASIONAL: Balance; Climb Stairs; Move About; Reach; Reach Above Shoulder; Stand; Static Neck Position; Headset; Vision (Far and Depth Perception); Color Vision; and Works with others.  RARE: Kneel; Stoop/Bend; Works around others; and Clients with Behavioral Challenges.

Selection Process

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Insurance & Claims Specialist (Pass/Fail):

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in business administration, risk management, safety, or a related field; AND one (1) year full-time paid professional verifiable experience in a risk management, loss control, insurance, claims investigation/processing, workers’ compensation claims adjusting/processing or closely related work; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as determined by the Director of Human Resources and Administration.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Insurance & Claims Specialist Senior (Pass/Fail):

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in business administration, risk management, safety or a related field AND two (2) years full-time paid professional verifiable experience in a risk management, loss control, insurance, claims investigation/processing, workers’ compensation claims adjusting/processing or closely related work; OR graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s degree in risk management, business administration, or a closely related field AND one (1) year full-time paid professional experience in a risk management, loss control, insurance, claims investigation/processing, workers’ compensation claims adjusting/processing or closely related work. 
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Note: At the discretion of the hiring authority, the successful candidate may be considered for appointment at the Insurance & Claims Specialist Senior level, contingent on minimum qualifications and department need.  This would be determined at the time a job offer is extended.

RATING SYSTEM:
Supplemental Questions will be 100% of the scoring process:

Points will be awarded based on the applicants answers to supplemental questions 7-11.
