Position Description

This position is responsible for the operations of Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Services (MH & SUDS) Member Intake. Serve as an entry point to the MH & SUDS department for members who are experiencing mental health or substance use related needs. Responsible for: management of member related telephone, fax, and electronic communications, as well as processing care management related inquiries from providers, physicians, and/or facilities. Collaborates with Care Managers, Utilization Management Specialists, providers and members/responsible parties to assist with behavioral health care delivery. May participate in the coordination of crisis intervention as appropriate.

• Serve as a first point of contact for member and provider, including but not limited to triaging, screening and assisting with meeting the member and provider needs, coordinating referrals and assist with in-network provider identification for behavioral health related services.

• Provide accurate and timely follow up to members based on research of in-network providers and become familiar with provider specialty services.

• Coordinate and complete screening referrals to the care management team if member opts to participate in care management programs.

• Receive and triage referrals from counties, providers, facilities or clinic staff. Conduct outbound calls to members and assist in linkage to behavioral health services as needed.

• Prepare member files for the case management and utilization management teams for the follow up post hospitalization process.

• Understand and interpret reports that are generated from UCare's claims based systems (HealthRules) to determine if members meet case management criteria.

• Collaborate with Care Management and/or Utilization Review Teams to document, schedule and identify improvements in engagement/triage processes as it relates to: timelines, deliverables, resource allocation and problem-solving strategies to improve outcomes for members.

• Complete accurate, thorough, and timely documentation in clinical documentation system. Meet productivity and quality measures established by the department.

• Understand, implement and support the Evidence of Coverage (EOC), Certificate of Coverage (COC), organization policies/protocols, authorization grid, department procedures and state and federal rules.

• Other projects and duties as assigned.


Two years of post-high school at an accredited college, university or vocational school with focus on health, social service, psychology or related coursework. Demonstrated experience may be considered in lieu of degree.

Required Experience

Two years' experience in a health plan or health care industry in customer service, mental health and substance use disorder intake or crisis intervention setting. Knowledge and understanding of mental health and substance use disorder services and community resources. Use and understanding of medical terminology, CPT, ICD-10 coding, PC, Microsoft Office (with emphasis on Excel spreadsheets) and keyboard skills.

Preferred Experience

Experience working with state and federally funded program in an HMO or MCO utilization review environment highly desirable. Experience in a call center, health insurance, physician group practice, or community agency.
