Description:
About us:
Target is an iconic brand, a Fortune 50 company and one of America's leading retailers.

Target as a tech company? Absolutely. We're the behind-the-scenes powerhouse that fuels Target's passion and commitment to cutting-edge innovation. We anchor every facet of one of the world's best-loved retailers with a strong technology framework that relies on the latest tools and technologies-and the brightest people-to deliver incredible value to guests online and in stores. Target Technology Services is on a mission to offer the systems, tools and support that guests and team members need and deserve. Our high-performing teams balance independence with collaboration, and we pride ourselves on being versatile, agile and creative. We drive industry-leading technologies in support of every angle of the business, and help ensure that Target operates smoothly, securely and reliably from the inside out.

The Target.com Web Team builds and maintains one of the most visited e-commerce sites in the world. As part of this Target team, you will be a front-line contributor to the future of online commerce. We architect solutions to facilitate massive scale; design libraries and abstractions to make our jobs easier; embrace modern web development practices and tools to ensure consistency, stability, and performance; and are fully responsible for the Target.com UI web stack. We realize successes through our strong engineering culture and delighting our guests with great web experiences.

About the Team:

The Traffic & Wayfinding team is tasked with improving the overall performance of Target.com. Generally, performance is measured by the speed and smoothness at which a web page loads and at which the guest can begin to interact. There are many ways to measure and impact this and the team has currently defined the following ways to approach improvements: learn, measure, report, educate, and improve. A big part of this role is learning - along with Target Tech's 50 Days of Learning, your role requires you to dig deep into the inner workings of React, Next, Google Lighthouse, React Query, cloud infrastructure, among a plethora of other topics, and be part of the spearhead of web performance. Our team also heavily invests in the capabilities and tooling to enable all other engineers to debug and write performant code: this could range from documentation, to Google Lighthouse GitHub CI integrations, to building Grafana visualizations, to working with data analysts to extract meaningful data from our observability. Once we have visibility, we make sure to share it with the rest of the organization - we report to leadership, we create educational content, provide tech talks, partner with teams to conduct performance audits, send recurring newsletters, and more. Last but not least, we also get our hands dirty and implement performance optimizations and innovations!

About this Opportunity:

This is an open position for a Senior Frontend Engineer on the Traffic & Wayfinding - Web team. The leading questions this team helps answer is "how do we get people on Target.com and how do get them to where they want to go?". This team is a hyper-growth team - it started with 1 engineer last year and we are already at 7 engineers and hiring for more! We work on wayfinding features such as global header & footer, dynamic listing pages, and store locator; SEO & SEM features; and frontend page speed performance & mobile web optimizations.
