Role Overview:

A role in Denim and Wash Engineering means being on a team of engineers and who create products that truly embody the intent of Target-owned brands. Can you ensure that each product has that just-right mix of style, quality and value? Do you have a pulse on the key denim and wash trends, manufacturing advances and industry leading technology or innovation that meet strategic business goals? Then you'll have success on our talented and innovative team. Here, you will create fabric and washes that meet with our quality, responsible sourcing and performance standards. You will partner with our quality and compliance teams to understand performance testing protocols and develop products that meet them. Your work can help identify denim and wash trends, technical specifications and quality standards like raw materials, wash and finishes. You'll leverage collective expertise to suggest improvements to cost of goods, assembly, sustainability and ROI. You'll also collaborate with vendors to ensure that the brand vision is clearly understood and successfully brought to life with every product we offer. Job duties may change at any time due to business needs.

Research/Standards Development

  • Working knowledge of government regulations, safety protocols and Target performance standards for textiles.
  • Uses data analytics to stay current on guest trends, industry innovation and new technology pertaining to raw materials, and washes
  • Research & develop new raw-materials and washes with new or specific properties for use in a variety of denim products.


Product Development

  • Builds a Denim Strategy to deliver on guest needs
  • Holds self and partners accountable to Fabric Development Process and Calendar; makes recommendations for process/calendar improvements as appropriate.
  • Leverages internal and external partnerships to optimize execution.


  • Create and route technical specifications; owns a brand(s), subtype(s) or category; may have
  • Communicates with CTP partners as needed to Identify/ address "Guest" and CFT (CTB) related quality issues in production and coordinate for issue resolution
  • Take partners to understand business initiatives and strategies;
  • Maintain on-line and physical libraries.
  • Maintain tracking and reporting systems as appropriate.


  • Provide timely resolution to all issues relating to fabric development.
  • Provide technical expertise as needed to cross-functional teams


About you:

  • Engineering degree or equivalent based on specialization
  • 5-7 years related industry experience
  • Proficient technical knowledge of yarn spinning and processing, weaving and knitting processes, fabric dyeing, printing and finishing
  • Proficient technical knowledge of garment dry and wet processing, dyeing, printing and finishing
  • Knowledge of Fabric Analysis, Construction and Washes

This position may be eligible to be virtual based (also known as full-time remote) or could be 'Flex for your Day', a hybrid model where the team member has some flexibility to choose how and where they work to maximize their productivity and well-being, based on Target's needs. Most of Target's HQ team members work 'Flex for Your Day' with a blend of virtual work and onsite at a Target HQ location. Team members work with their leader to determine how the role, team, partners and business determines the flexibility. For team members who work virtual based, they enter into a work arrangement that means the team member works full-time from home or a non-Target location, and do not have a workstation at their assigned HQ location, but may travel to a HQ site up to 4 times a year.

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada residents is $85,400 to $153,700.
