As a Principal Engineer on our Traffic Management Engineering team, you will evolve the traffic steering capabilities across Target's enterprise. Traffic Management is a critical infrastructure area that is essential to help Target deliver on its purpose "To help all families discover the joy of everyday life." We help connect our Target guests and over 350,000 Team Members to our Target Tech delivered Services and Applications. This team is building the network of the future at Target through advanced and intelligent steering decisions and mechanisms to meet Target's needs.

As a Principal Engineer on the Traffic Management team you will:

Be a technical leader in architecting, building, and deploying Traffic Management solutions at Target. You will partner across the organization to drive technical architectures, roadmaps, and product release and migration plans. You will work with leadership to develop the product plans as Target continues our strategy of modernizing our Network.

TECHNOLOGY:
  • Load Balancing technologies: F5, Envoy, Fabio, etc.
  • DNS, DHCP, and IPAM (DDI)
  • Content Delivery Networks (CDNs)
  • Software Languages such as Python, GoLang, and Java
  • Terraform, Ansible, and other other Infrastructure as Code tools
  • Metrics visualization with tools like Grafana


About You:
  • 4 year degree or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of Networking Experience
  • Demonstrates strong knowledge of Network Architectures in large Enterprise and Cloud environments.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and experience working with DevOps
  • Expert knowledge of CDN Provider architectures and configurations
  • Demonstrates skills in delivering complex projects that span multiple technology domains such as Compute, Storage, and Network
  • Demonstrates strong knowledge of Networking layers 3, 4, & 7 and network protocols TCP/IP, HTTP, & TLS as well as core routing/BGP
  • Experience utilizing CI/CD technologies (Git,Jenkins/Drone)
  • Experience with programming languages in either python, java, or go
  • Demonstrate some proficiency with Linux Operating Systems
  • Understands the concepts of network design and architecture of large scale networks
  • Write technical documentation in support of what you design and build
  • Resolves routine and non-routine technical issues with minimal assistance
  • Builds strong commitment within the team to support the appropriate team priorities
  • Maintains technical knowledge within areas of expertise
  • Stays current with new and evolving technologies via formal training and self-directed education


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with high performance HTTP(S) caching proxy software such as Varnish, Envoy Proxy, Apache Traffic Server, Nginx, or HAProxy
  • Experience with Linux kernel tuning for high traffic loads
  • Experience with developing/contributing to Free and Open Source software or being part of an open-source community


This position may be considered for a Full-Time Remote or Hybrid work arrangement based on Target's needs. A Hybrid work arrangement means the team members core role will be a blend of virtual and onsite at a Target location. A Full-Time Remote work arrangement means the team member works full-time from home or an alternate location that's not a Target location, does not have a desk at their primary HQ work location and may travel to HQ up to 4 times a year.

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada residents is $137,500-$247,500. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, Target cares about and invests in you as a team member, so that you can take care of yourself and your family.
