Job Summary

The Office of Attorney General Keith Ellison — one of Minnesota’s largest public law offices and recognized as a Star Tribune 2021 & 2022 Top Workplace — has a clear mission: we help Minnesotans afford their lives and live with dignity, safety, and respect. We are a dynamic group of dedicated professionals who could all work elsewhere but choose public service as a calling, and we are actively building an internal culture that supports that calling.

The Office has openings on its leadership team.  In particular, there are one or more positions open for division managers –first level managers at the AGO who oversee a team of attorneys and legal professionals.  Division managers are responsible for creating a positive and inclusive work environment, in which the division can perform high quality legal work for the people of Minnesota, as well as for leading the division in carrying out the Attorney General’s vision and maintaining positive relationships with the division’s primary clients (whether external or internal). Most division managers perform substantive legal work, as first or second chair on litigated and contested matters.  They report to the Deputy Attorney General (or Solicitor General) who leads the applicable Section.

One immediate management need is for someone to lead the Tax Division and Education Division.  The Tax Division represents the Department of Revenue in litigated matters, while the Education Division primarily represents the Minnesota Department of Education and Minnesota State in litigated matters.  A single attorney currently manages those two divisions, but the Office is interested in candidates with a wide variety of backgrounds for one or both divisions.   Both divisions are housed in the Solicitor General’s Section of the Office.  The Office is interested in applicants with experience in one or both of those substantive areas, as well as attorneys with other legal and leadership experience that have a strong desire to continue building the best public law office in Minnesota.

The selected attorney will have four primary responsibilities.  The first is managing the employees in the division, including hiring, onboarding, coaching, and evaluating team members.  The second is case management, including assigning cases, providing direct work on cases, and reviewing draft submissions of others.  The third responsibility is to ensure strong client relationships through regular communication and coordination.  And finally, the manager is responsible for the administration of the division, including setting division goals, attending regular management meetings, compiling reports and budgets, and communicating key issues to the executive team. Because cases can be venued anywhere in the state, periodic travel throughout Minnesota may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from a law school accredited by the ABA
  • Licensed to practice in the State of Minnesota or ability to obtain licensures within 90 days of hire
  • 10 or more years of civil litigation experience or equivalent Commitment to create a positive and inclusive work culture that obtains strong results Proven ability to lead in an inclusive, creative, and collaborative work environment Outstanding oral and written communication skills (a cover letter including a writing sample of up to five pages is required with application) Ability to multitask Ability to travel to counties throughout the state

Preferred Qualifications

  • Management experience Significant litigation experience in an area of relevance to the AGO
