The University of Wisconsin-Stout invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in design history within the largest public school of art and design in the upper Midwest. Seeking candidates with a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and a desire to shape students' perspectives on design history and practice. Primary expectations include teaching at the undergraduate level with potential to teach at the graduate level if appropriately qualified with terminal degree, conduct creative research, and perform service to the University in the form of committees and other activities to assist university functions. Course delivery is in-person and in accordance with NASAD standards. This is a full-time, 9-month academic year position.
Typical courses include survey level History of Design along with potential survey of art history courses and courses in area of expertise, based on ability and need. An innovative and robust research agenda is highly valued and is an essential aspect of this position. Minimum / Required
- Have one of the following by date of hire:
- Terminal Degree (including ABD) in relevant field
- Master's Degree with 5 years of experience in relevant field
- Evidence of potential for teaching excellence
- Background in design history, art history or a related field
- Evidence of excellent written and organizational skills
- Completed Terminal Degree in related field of study
- Evidence of excellence in teaching
- Ability to teach courses in design history and survey of art history
- Interest in developing or presently conducting research in design history or art history
- Interest to teach courses related to design history and develop new curriculum in design or art history such as history of graphic design, history of illustration, industrial product design and other areas
- Demonstrated success working with diverse student populations
- Commitment to cultivating a work environment and student experience that embraces inclusion
Note: A terminal degree (M.F.A., Ph.D., etc.) required for promotion to full professor, unless by special exception process.RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teach courses in accordance with NASAD standards
- Provide student academic advisement and conduct assessment of student learning. This includes contributing to academic program assessment, accreditation, and continuous improvement processes, in collaboration with faculty and staff.
- Write curriculum for new areas in design or art history
- Contribute to Department, School and/or University committees
- Conduct research in design or art history
- Attend department and School of Art and Design meetings
- Demonstrate organizational skills, collegiality
