UW-Stout seeks a dynamic, innovative instructor to help raise the profile of the Spanish minor on campus and reimagine the role of language study in a polytechnic context. Applicants must be able to teach all levels of Spanish language classes, including Spanish for the professions in alignment with UW-Stout's undergraduate programs. Beyond foundational and applied Spanish courses, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach existing upper-level content courses in film, culture, and literature, or develop new courses in applied Spanish. The successful candidate will also oversee the Spanish minor and engage in curriculum assessment and revision, as well as collaborate with study abroad programming, other departments, student groups, and the local community to promote the study of language. One vacancy will be filled either at the rank of lecturer (non-tenure track instructional academic staff with a renewable annual contract) or assistant professor (tenure-track faculty), depending on qualifications. A separate vacancy announcement lists the minimum and preferred qualifications for the rank of assistant professor.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum / Required
' Master's degree in the area of Spanish, Foreign Language Education, or related field, is required by the start of the position
' Interest in advancing student learning in area of Spanish and global languages
' Native or near native competency in Spanish and English
Highly Desired/Preferred
' Expertise in foreign language pedagogy
' Demonstrated excellence in teaching Spanish
' Record of success in growing student interest and participation in Spanish
' Demonstrated intercultural competence and the impact on the student experience
' Experience in program development and leadership
' Demonstrated experience in establishing a climate (work environment) that embraces inclusion.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Teach undergraduate Spanish courses, and/or other courses to be determined based on student enrollment and the candidate's qualifications.
2. Provide student academic advisement and conduct assessment of student learning. This includes contributing to academic program assessment, accreditation, and continuous improvement processes, in collaboration with faculty and staff.
3. Coordinate with relevant departments and off-campus stakeholders to expand recruitment and enrollment in the Applied Foreign Languages minor and Spanish minor.
4. Collaborate with the Office of International Education to align Spanish programming with study abroad opportunities.
5. Develop and implement a plan for programmatic revisions to the Spanish minor to ensure its long-term sustainability, including curricular revisions.
6. Engage in service to the department, university, and profession above and beyond managing the Spanish minor.
DEPARTMENT INFORMATION
Spanish and Global Languages are currently housed in the Social Science Department, a vibrant, multidisciplinary department that includes anthropology, sociology, history, political science, geography, and economics. The department offers a bachelor's degree in Applied Social Science as well as numerous minor programs, in addition to the Spanish minor, and is developing a new major in public policy analysis. The department also participates in the University of Wisconsin System Collaborative Language Program, offering courses in French and German.
