JOB DETAILS:

The Department of Kinesiology, Health, Food and Nutritional Sciences (KHFNS) at the University of Wisconsin-Stout invites applications for an academic year Lab Manager and Lecturer renewable position for the food science and technology program commencing on August 19, 2024. This is a 9-month position with a split appointment with 50% lab management and 50% teaching. The 50% Laboratory Manager position is responsible for assisting faculty with inventorying and overseeing the use and maintenance of items and equipment of the food science and technology program. Equipment in the labs includes but is not limited to operations in conventional PCR, Real Time PCR, protein/nucleic acid gel electrophoresis units, Extrusion, Drying, Thermal Processing (retort), Pasteurization, Extraction, Centrifugation, Sensory Analysis; Analytical equipment including Accelerated Solvent Extraction, Chromatography (Gas/High Performance Liquid); Mass Spectrometry; Spectroscopy (UV/Vis); Electrophoresis; Rheology (Instron/Viscometer), pH meter, Colorimetry and software associated with the various pieces of hardware above. As part of 50% lecturer position the individual is expected to teach food science related lab and theory courses such as food science, food quality, food safety engineering, food plant design, etc. We are seeking a dynamic, creative individual with expertise in food science/engineering to assist us with the implementation of innovative food science and technology undergraduate and graduate programs. The candidate is expected to be a team member who is passionate and committed to promoting the development of a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum / Required
  • Earned master's degree in food science and technology or closely related field by date of appointment
  • Expertise in strong technical skills working with lab equipment
  • Expertise and interest in advancing student learning for the food science and technology program
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
Highly Desired/Preferred
  • Work experience in lab/pilot plant management including equipment maintenance and repair
  • Knowledge of inventory management and lab/pilot plant safety
  • Teaching experience related to food science courses
  • Commitment to cultivating a work environment and student experience that embraces inclusion
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintain and repair lab/pilot plant equipment for teaching and research
  • Maintain laboratory inventories and supplies
  • Oversee safe handling and disposal of chemical and biological hazardous materials, as needed
  • Support students, instructors, and other stakeholders on safe and proper handling/care/use of equipment and software
  • Consult with faculty and staff regarding equipment needs and assist in the preparation of equipment requests
  • Develop and facilitate trainings regarding scientific experimentation, technical procedures, and equipment operations to various audiences
  • Teach effectively food science related courses as assigned by the program (online and on-campus - theory and lab)
DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

University of Wisconsin-Stout's KHFNS Department is responsible for administering the B.S degree in Food Science and Technology; ACEND accredited B.S degree in Dietetics; and B.S degree in Health, Wellness, and Fitness; master's (M.S) degree in Food Science and Technology and master's (M.S.) degree in Nutrition and Dietetics (online). Food Science and Technology program is an Institute of Food Technologists (IFT)-approved program. The KHFNS Department is committed to creating an inclusive campus community.
