CUSTODIAN - ACADEMIC BUILDINGS
CONTINOUS RECRUITMENT
A variety of permanent custodial positions are/may be available in our Facilities Management Department. Minimum starting salary is $15.00/hour.
Typical shifts are:
1 st Shift: 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
2 nd Shift: 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Depending on the shift, night and weekend differential pay may apply to a position.
- Night Differential - Eighty Cents ($.80) per hour for all hours worked between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.
- Weekend Differential - Eighty cents ($.80) per hour for all weekend hours worked (i.e., work hours between the hours of 12:01 a.m. on Saturday and 12:00 midnight on Sunday).
The mission of the UW Stout Academic Custodial Team is to provide an exceptional experience for students, staff, and visitors through the delivery of cleaning services and upkeep of the campus buildings. Work is to be performed in accordance with best practices, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Work Instructions (WI). This position reports directly to the Custodial Supervisor and receives direction and feedback from Custodial Leads, and Custodial Supervisor.
Core Job Responsibilities
- Effectively perform and meet cleaning and maintenance expectations in assigned areas as defined by the Stout Cleaning Standards and operational requirements
- Properly use and care for all equipment
- Maintain organization of supply areas and equipment
- Maintain clean/clear walkways to ensure they are free of debris, litter, snow, and ice
- Document inventory and request additional supplies as needed
- Document and report needed repairs, vandalism, and pest control concerns
- Work with campus customers, co-workers, and supervisors as a team
- Have a commitment to safety and quality by ensuring all activities performed on campus are done in accordance with Campus policies, safety practices, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)s, and Work Instructions (WI)s
- Other duties as assigned
- High level of dedication to quality service by interacting directly with students, staff, and other external customers as a building point of contact. Will be identifiable by a custodial uniform shirt (provided) and proper display of ID badge.
Minimum
- Willing to learn the proper uses of cleaning products, their intended application, and follow the safety rules related to each product
- Willing to learn and become proficient in the use and care of all required Custodial related equipment
- Adherence to UW System, campus, and departmental work rules
- Willing to learn basic computer skills to complete on-line forms, access communications and information, and review and respond to emails (Outlook)
- Able to effectively communicate using a cellular phone
- Willing to receive and provide feedback in a positive, constructive, and professional manor
- Physical Demands:
- Daily:
- Walking (flat and uneven surfaces), standing, stooping, reaching, grasping, pushing, pulling, squeezing (spray bottle)
- Visual acuity to see close enough to read procedures and far enough to see areas that need to be cleaned (cobwebs near ceiling in your home)
- Regular:
- Climb ladder to reach 10" ceiling to clean and/or change bulbs
- Lifting/moving up to 50lbs. individually and greater amounts in a team
- Ability to kneel and stand back up to change parts and clean custodial equipment
- Working outside as needed during all seasons in Wisconsin
- Daily:
- Demonstrated successes of the 'Custodial services Competencies'
Customer Service (building/managing relationships )
Works both independently and collaboratively with others on campus (in/outside of unit) to achieve cleaning and upkeep goals. Responds to requests/needs in a timely manner. Utilizes interpersonal sensitivity and displays appreciation of differences across the full communications spectrum.
Cognition (ability to think and learn)
Capable of fully using required custodial unit technology, systems, and equipment, including email system, online personnel system, SharePoint system. Analyze and process information, see inter-relationships and act on them to continuously improve outcomes and how work gets done.
Personal Responsibility (individual - environment)
Accountable for actions and results. Brings a positive approach to the work environment. Receives coaching/feedback constructively; accepts/integrates input from others. Ask questions when unsure.
Fundamental Skills (subject matter/functional expertise )
Brings functional expertise to bear in daily tasks. Uses critical thinking to process communications, perspectives, policies and/or procedures and solve problems. Knows and understands the importance of professional ethics.
Leadership (formal/informal ability to influence)
Accomplishes goals within the current environment and uses foresight to envision where future challenges and opportunities will lead, is decisive, inspires and helps others without being overbearing.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The minimum hourly rate for this position is $15.00/hour. A six-month probationary period is required. The UW System provides an excellent benefits package including participation in the Wisconsin State retirement plan.
