PUBLICATIONS EDITING SPECIALIST
Summary: This position electronically writes, edits, and proofreads materials using Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Word to support state assessment projects as part of the in-house Publications team responsible for producing both print and online materials. Editing specialists work individually and as part of a team composed of the Publications supervisor, senior editing specialists, and layout and graphic design specialists. The editing specialist works with the Publications team to ensure that materials developed within the department are produced with 100% accuracy based on client specifications. The ideal candidate will possess a strong ability to read large documents that include tables, charts, graphics, and other visual elements for prolonged periods of time, along with exceptional skills in spelling, grammar, and writing.
Essential Position Responsibilities:
- Edit both content and layout of a wide range of testing and classroom materials, including test booklets, answer documents, administration manuals, interpretive guides, technical reports, item samplers, and other educational materials
- Perform various levels of editing, including copyediting, proofreading, cold reads, checking design changes, and word-for-word comparisons
- Ensure client requests have been met with 100% accuracy to all materials that flow through the editing process
- Obtain information from project managers and test development specialists regarding the client's product and service needs
- Confer with team members regarding the design of current projects and workflow procedures
- Efficiently organize workload independently to ensure project completion and due dates are consistently met
- Consistently employ critical-thinking and decision-making skills, including the following:
- make accurate decisions based on available information
- understand the client's needs and requirements when making decisions
- know when to use individual judgment versus when to query or confer with team leads and other points of contact
- logically prioritize work and projects in relation to team-driven schedules and timelines
- Work successfully in a deadline-driven team environment and perform well during times of increased workload
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in English or literature with emphasis on writing and grammar skills
- Four years related work experience
- Deep love of reading and the written word
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills
- Meticulous attention to detail and scrupulous review of work
- Exceptional spelling skills
- Superior written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite products
- Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat DC markup, particularly commenting tools
- Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Bridge)
- Knowledge of style guides and how to use them, particularly the Chicago Manual of Style
- Knowledge of 508 compliance
Essential Job Requirements:
- Report to work promptly when scheduled
- Work under supervision and accept and apply feedback
- Use Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office Suite, and necessary graphics programs proficiently
- Demonstrate proficiency in learning and applying stylistic rules and editorial processes
- Clearly communicate with team members, project managers, and test development specialists in both written and verbal form
- Manage multiple job functions simultaneously and switch gears across multiple projects as needed
- Relate effectively and work respectfully with diverse work groups
- Consistently perform well during times of increased workload
- Set and meet deadlines
- Perform other duties as needed
Reporting to this position: No direct reports
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit and/or stand for up to 8-hour periods of time
- Ability to look at a computer monitor and utilize a keyboard and mouse for up to 8-hour periods of time
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds as necessary
