JOB DETAILS:

Reporting to the Director of Multicultural Student Services (MSS), the Assistant Director will have responsibilities in developing, evaluating, and implementing access and retention efforts to support historically underrepresented/underserved students (African American/Black, Indigenous/Native American, Hispanic/Latinx, Asian American/Hmong, biracial and multiethnic). The Assistant Director will lead the strategic plan for the Stoutward Bound (SWB) early-bridge program with a focus on access, matriculation, and retention of first-year students in partnership with Admissions, First Year Registration and Orientation, SWB stakeholders, and university partners. SWB is designed to provide students with a supportive environment committed to preparing them for success and supporting their transition from high school to college. This position will also assist the Director in providing leadership for programs and services supporting the successful college transition, retention, and graduation of historically underrepresented/underserved students.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum / Required
  • One of the following:
    • Master's degree in education, student affairs administration, or related field with at least 1.5 years of direct professional experience working with underrepresented student populations and/or communities or
    • Bachelor's degree in education, student affairs administration, or related field with a minimum of 3 years of direct professional experience working with underrepresented populations and/or communities
  • Experience in the supervision and leadership of staff (i.e. professional staff, graduate assistants and/or student workers)
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, coordinating and facilitating programs/workshops
  • Evidence of effective interpersonal communication skills that demonstrate the ability to work with and build rapport with students, university partners, and stakeholders
Highly Desired
  • Strong demonstrated experience working with and supporting African American/Black, Indigenous/Native American, Hispanic/Latinx, Asian American/Hmong, biracial, and multiethnic students
  • Demonstrated experience with professional advising in higher education
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating and evaluating college access, early-bridge, and/or retention programs
  • Demonstrated ability to manage conflict and/or solve complex problems
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Work closely with Director to advance college priorities for improved student access and retention of historically underrepresented students.
  • Maintain a caseload of students and provide advisement and support to students in the areas of college transition, academic support, career counseling, financial literacy, graduate education, etc.
  • Manage support and retention services to high and early support MSS students (academic probation, academic dismissal, early alert).
  • Promote the academic success of historically unrepresented students by offering distinctive programs and activities that introduce students to a community of networks and teach students how to navigate and/or negotiate processes within the institution.
  • Facilitate and work collaboratively with MSS staff, university employees and departments to coordinate academic, career, financial literacy, personal and cultural enrichment workshops and activities.
  • Lead the strategic plan for Stoutward Bound (SWB) and provide annual report on program progress and outcomes.
  • Provide leadership for the development, coordination, and implementation of the Stoutward Bound early start program; and provide leadership and support for the advisement and academic monitoring of the SWB students throughout the academic year and support the programming in the Multicultural Living Community (MLC).
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff across departments to coordinate SWB courses, housing and meals, course registration, workshops, and services to support the needs and success of students.
  • Provide leadership and supervision for the peer leaders including hiring, onboarding, training, and supporting their professional development.
  • In partnership with Admissions, lead the SWB recruitment plan. This includes, but is not limited to, developing a communication plan, building relationships with college access partners, presenting about MSS and SWB for campus visits, and outreach to prospective students.
  • In partnership with the Director, develop strategies/methodologies to measure, monitor, and evaluate the effectiveness of SWB and other MSS programs, and assess student needs and program outcomes.
  • Serve as an advisor and provide support to multicultural student organizations through advisement, leadership development, and guidance with event planning and coordination.
  • Assist the Director in budget planning, tracking, and reconciliation with responsibilities in maintaining designated program budget.
  • Work collaboratively with office support personnel to ensure appropriate documentation, contracts, program expenses and other information are within departmental and university guidelines and policies.
  • Utilize EAB Navigate to monitor students' academic progress, maintain record of student contacts/engagement, and export reports.
  • Occasional evening and/or weekend work is expected.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
